Eric Beynon
Eric Beynon (Entre le 2ème et 3ème Millénaire après J.C.)

Eric Beynon was born in Geneva in 1935. He trained at his home city's School of Fine and Decorative Arts before being invited to the Fine Arts Academy in Karlsruhe, Germany to follow the teaching of Erich Heckel (Brücke) followed by a stint at Essen's Folkwang Schule. After a short time working as a commercial artist for the United Nations in Geneva, he moved to Paris where he was to spend the next forty-odd years.

Artist note Eric Beynon 1990
As regards painting and painting alone, once beyond the fastidious mention prevailing today, it may be possible to question anew the works of Genre painters bequeathed by history, the latter having vanished over a century ago following the disappearance of their hierarchisation. In the manner of a hermit crab within specific codified rhetorical boundaries, the possibility arises to occupy that expanse and escape the genetic evolution of Modern Art.

As soon as he settled in Paris, he exhibited with the major artists of the period at the Drouain, Fachetti and Stadler Galleries. He was awarded the Lissone Prize (the Second Prize, with First Prize going to Georges Matthieu) in Italy. Beynon then put together large assemblages that were soon shown at the Stadler Gallery and the Bertha Schäfer Gallery in New York along with the major MOMA show on assemblages, as well as in Dallas and San Francisco. Pierre Restany convinced him to exhibit new works suggestive of the "Nouveau réalisme" school. He met Spoerri and Tinguely along with Niki de Saint Phalle whose first exhibition at the Galerie J he would organize the technical aspect of, along with Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. He himself briefly exhibited at that same gallery.

Gérard Talabot later got in touch with him to take part in the "Mythologie Quotidienne" show at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris where he exhibited painted photographic canvasses then large-format works printed on canvas, some turned out in batches of 50, which were later to be acquired by various collectors throughout the European market. Save for a brief showing in Italy, there has been no sign of them since then.

From 1972 on, he produced photomontages designed to precede a return to painting. They serve today to support a return to historical genres. In the 1970s, after involving himself in the creation of theatrical scenery (Medea: Xenakis, Lavelli, Raffaelli, Roland Petit, Casino de Paris etc.) and architectural projects, he resumed exhibiting his works in the context of the Génie de la Bastille and at showings. He worked both in the village of Tanlay, in Burgundy, and in Paris.

Since 2003, he has lived and worked in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland.
